New-look YABA joins forces with Nabarro in sponsor deal

Yorkshire Association of Business Angels (YABA) has welcomed its first Corporate Specialist sponsor - commercial law firm Nabarro.

After 17 successful years supporting business angels and entrepreneurs in Yorkshire, YABA re-launched in March as a self-sustaining organisation following the completion of its Yorkshire Forward funding. YABA has made significant changes and improvements to its membership packages for both angel members and corporate sponsors, and its geographic area has been expanded to include the whole of the north of England.

Yorkshire Business Angels instrumental in CamStent funding round success

Medical materials company, CamStent Ltd, has successfully completed a second funding round and Yorkshire Association of Business Angels (YABA) members have played a crucial role in its success.

Following on from the £350,000 raised in the first funding round in July 2011, CamStent aimed to raise a further £400,000 to progress the application of its patented polymer coatings which resist the growth of bacteria in medical devices. The funding round was oversubscribed and closed when applications reached £508,000.

Angels of the North: YABA launches new investment services for angels and entrepreneurs

The Yorkshire Association of Business Angels (YABA) has today announced its intention to become the pre-eminent investor network in the north of England, by launching a new suite of investment services for business angels and corporate investors.

Says YABA Chairman, Andrew Burton: “Our membership has grown rapidly in recent years, and we’ve reached a size that allows us to introduce a more sophisticated offer to both our membership and to those companies looking for finance. YABA is evolving, and these are exciting times.”

North Yorkshire software company breaks new ground thanks to investment

YABA pilots opportunity appraisal service for universities

A new service to appraise commercial opportunities arising from university research in the region is being trialled by the Yorkshire Association of Business Angels (YABA).

The aim of the new Commercial Evaluation Service is to co-ordinate discussions about specific new technologies, products and services between business angels – acting as business experts – the academics and the University’s commercialisation managers.

Intuitive Business Intelligence Ltd is a prime example of this. The company was started by YABA members Tony Bray and Roger Stocker and evolved from an initial discussion at an investment forum in 2009.

Camstent raises Finance

In total, the company has raised £350,000 to further develop its novel medical device technology, with the YABA members’ investment accounting for a third of this finance. Other investors included members of the business angel communities in Cambridge and London.

Mentoring pays off

Mentoring from YABA angel member Steve Naylor has helped University of Sheffield student, Jennifer Ashton, move a step closer to opening her business, Kolours.

Kolours is a hair and beauty salon concept which will specialise in Afro-Caribbean hair and skin treatments. The idea for Kolours was born when Jennifer moved to Sheffield and couldn’t find a suitable salon. She has just completed a BA in Accountancy, Financial Management and Business Management at the University.

Continental Brands toasts new investment

A relatively modest business angel investment has enabled Leeds-based entrepreneur Simon Jackson (27) to unlock the potential of his business – which is now performing way above even his own expectations.

Spotting a business opportunity in the UK’s thirst for continental beers, and using his knowledge of the catering industry, Simon’s import and distribution business, Continental Brands, looks set for major success, thanks to an investment from Yorkshire business angel Kevin Wheelock.
