Event title: GEIF Breakfast Briefing - 'The changing landscape for science and technology innovation' Summary: GEIF is delighted to be welcoming Professor Sir Richard Friend as the guest speaker at its forthcoming Breakfast Briefing on Thursday 20 October.
Sir Richard Friend has been Cavendish Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge since 1995. He co-founded Plastic Logic Limited in December 2000 to commercialise science for printing electronics that had been invented in the Cavendish Laboratory by himself and colleagues Henning Sirringhaus and Takeo Kawase and is also one of the Principal Investigators in the new Cambridge-based Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration (IRC) on Nanotechnology, and Chief Scientist and co-founder of Cambridge Display Technology (CDT).
With over 600 publications and more than 20 patents, Professor Friend has been the recipient of many prestigious awards including the 2002 Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal for his outstanding personal contribution to British engineering, and was knighted for services to physics on June 16, 2003.
During his talk, Sir Richard will comment on the changing balance of science and technology development, which has been away from big corporate labs, and towards the universities and to smaller high-tech companies. He will discuss how this offers particular opportunities within Cambridge.
